Doubling Gate Capacity at Barbours Cut Container Terminal
We’re making improvements to better serve you. Recently, unprecedented demand for cargo has impacted the entire supply chain. At Port Houston we have been moving record amounts of cargo, but it’s not without growing pains. We want to assure you we are making investments to improve your experience.
Construction is underway at the Barbours Cut Container Terminal (BCT). This $43 million investment will vastly enhance truck entry into the terminal. In the short term, drivers may experience longer than normal waits to get into the gate. In the long term, we will have nearly double the in-gate capacity. We are adding 14 gates, making 29 total gates at BCT, plus enhancing technology and support areas that will expedite entry to the terminal. Work is expected to be complete in May, though we are working to open some additional gates as early as next week. We are also considering additional gate hours and added traffic control, among other solutions, to keep cargo flowing efficiently. We are collaborating with our partners, like those in the trucking industry, to identify additional solutions to keep cargo flowing efficiently.
We are improving traffic control support and will extend operating gate hours to 6am – 7pm Monday-Friday beginning on Monday, January 31, 2022. TxDOT made improvements to the roads outside our gates last year, including adding a turn lane. Future improvements are being studied for connectivity of SH-146/225 and Barbours Cut Blvd. We know how important consistency and efficiency is to all our customers and we are working hard to continue to provide the customer service levels you expect from us. Our average truck turn times remain below 45 minutes. In the past week we have broken our record for daily gate transactions at BCT twice, most recently on 1/25 with 5,397 transactions. You can count on Port Houston to continue to meet your needs now and make investments for the future too. Thank you for choosing Port Houston.
