This facility is considered the most modern and environmentally sensitive container terminal on the U.S. Gulf coast. When fully developed, this state-of-the-art terminal will have a total of seven container berths with the capacity to handle 2.3 million TEUs on a complex which includes 376 acres of container yard and a 123-acre intermodal facility. The terminal features electronic data interchange capabilities and a computerized inventory control system that tracks the status and location of individual containers. Trucking access to and from the terminal gates is continuous with two dedicated flyover ramps connecting Texas 146 and Port Road.
The terminal’s environmental benefits include the preservation of 956 acres of diverse coastal habitat, 200 acres of new marsh, 173 acres of wetlands created or enhanced and the preservation of a 128-acre buffer zone. The facility will generate more than 32,000 jobs and add approximately $1.6 billion to the Texas economy through wages and tax revenues.
Port Houston is the perfect gateway to import and distribute finished vehicles. The Bayport Auto Terminal opened for business at the Port of Houston in November 2016. The terminal was originally used for cruise operations; but has been re-purposed to accommodate Ro Ro (Roll on / Roll off) operations for new inbound vehicles for auto distribution.
