Port Houston’s Maritime Education Outreach department participated in the Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas’ “JA Inspire” event December 7-8 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. More than 10,000 middle school students from the greater Houston region attended to learn about potential careers, experience, benefits and certifications available. Participating school districts included Deer Park, Galena Park, Houston, La Porte and Alief ISDs.
“Port Houston’s presence at this educational fair and expo provides an opportunity for the port to share our story to the next generation,” said Gilda Ramirez, senior director for small business and education outreach for Port Houston. “We are the International Port of Texas, and networking with these students goes a long way to promote our profession. The ‘JA Inspire event’ is a great way to create job awareness for these bright young scholars.”
“JA Inspire” is an interactive experience that exposes eighth grade students to the vast variety of local career opportunities, enabling students to interact with business representatives and see displays from Southeast Texas companies through industry presentations and career stations. The program offers endorsement tracks in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business, public services, art and humanities.
